THE GOURD — A FORM THAT CARRIES
Across generations, the gourd has symbolized continuity, protection, and good fortune
— a vessel for what we carry forward.
01 — A VESSEL OF MEANING
In Japan, the gourd is known as hisago or hyōtan. Its rounded chambers and narrowing center create a form that feels both humble and beautifully complete.
Traditionally used to carry water, medicine, and seeds, the gourd became associated with safeguarding life and preserving what matters. Over time, its practical purpose developed into something symbolic: a vessel for health, prosperity, and enduring fortune.
02 — CONTINUITY IN FORM
The gourd’s silhouette appears as two forms joined into one—separate, yet inseparable. This natural rhythm suggests connection, balance, and life passing gently from one state into another.
Its climbing vines and abundant fruit also made it a symbol of continuity across generations. Nothing about the form is rigid or perfectly symmetrical. Its beauty comes from softness, movement, and the quiet relationship between its curves.

03 — WHAT KEVIN SAW
Kevin was drawn to the contrast within the gourd: an ordinary natural object carrying centuries of meaning. Its shape feels playful at first, yet its symbolism speaks of protection, resilience, and everything we choose to carry with us.
Rather than reproducing the gourd literally, Kevin focused on its rhythm. The narrowing waist, generous curves, and sense of contained space became the foundation for forms that feel sculptural, intimate, and distinctly wearable.
04 — THE FORM, REIMAGINED
Across the collection, the gourd is interpreted through luminous pearls, jadeite, abalone, gemstones, and warm metal. Some pieces preserve its recognizable silhouette, while others reduce it to a curve, a reflection, or two forms held in balance.
Each material brings a different quality to the symbol—pearl lends softness, jadeite evokes longevity, and iridescent surfaces suggest an inner world held beneath the form.
These pieces are not simply inspired by a vessel. They are made to become vessels themselves—for memory, meaning, and whatever the wearer wishes to carry forward.
